New FAPI PET Scan Service Now Available – More Precise Imaging for Cancer and Inflammation

12 May 2026 PET-CT, PET-MR, What's New

Following the recent launch of the new radiopharmaceutical FAPI ([18F] AlF-FAPI-74) at our Cyclotron Pharmaceutical Centre, we are excited to share that the FAPI PET Scan service is now available at our department starting 31 March 2026.

FAPI PET Scan is an innovative molecular imaging technique that targets Fibroblast Activation Protein (FAP) to detect stromal activity surrounding cancer cells. It provides the following remarkable advantages over conventional FDG tracers:

 ✓ Superior Cancer Diagnosis:

It offers higher sensitivity for detecting cancers like gastric, pancreatic, and liver cancer, which are often difficult to be visualized in FDG scans.

✓ Precise Cancer Staging:

With better tumour-to-background ratio, it provides clearer visualization of tumour infiltration and identifies tiny metastatic lesions.

✓ Assist in Treatment Monitoring:

It helps medical teams assess how well a patient is responding to therapy for optimizing future treatment plans.

✓ Enhanced Patient Experience:

Unlike FDG scan, FAPI is independent of blood glucose level. It does not require fasting even for diabetic patients as it is independent of blood glucose level.

The two patients underwent PET-CT scans with three different radiotracers. Tumours were clearly identified by FAPI in both cases, while the traditional tracers varied in performance.

  • Patient A: The tumour was clearly detected by FAPI and acetate scans, but remained negative in the FDG scan.
  • Patient B: The tumour showed positive results in FAPI and FDG scans, but it was indistinct from background uptake in the acetate scan.
